Threat watch

Scam alerts worth knowing.

The patterns below repeat every month. Familiarity is the first line of defence — and recognising a scam early is often the difference between a resolvable case and a total loss.

Audio Manipulation

AI Voice Cloning

Scammers clone the voices of relatives, executives, or trusted contacts using just seconds of publicly available audio. They then call demanding urgent transfers.

Warning signs
  • Unusual urgency around a wire
  • Caller resists switching channels
  • Voice sounds slightly delayed or robotic
Impostors

Fake Recovery Firms

Impostor teams contact past victims offering 'guaranteed recovery' in exchange for taxes, unlock fees, or gas fees paid in crypto. They disappear once paid.

Warning signs
  • Cold contact via Telegram/WhatsApp
  • Upfront payments in crypto only
  • Fake certificates or law-firm letterheads
Long-con

Pig Butchering

A long-term relationship — often started on dating apps — used to slowly manipulate victims into an investment 'platform' that later blocks withdrawals.

Warning signs
  • Investment pitched by a new romantic contact
  • Withdrawals require additional deposits
  • Platform is unregulated / obscure
Cold Approach

Tech Support Scams

Fake virus warnings and pop-ups drive victims to call a support line. Attackers gain remote access and drain accounts under the pretence of 'securing' them.

Warning signs
  • Pop-ups demanding a phone call
  • Requests to install AnyDesk/TeamViewer
  • 'Refund' overpayment tricks
Impersonation

Executive / Bank Impersonation

Fraudsters pose as your bank's fraud department or a company executive to authorise fake transfers using spoofed numbers and internal-sounding language.

Warning signs
  • Caller uses your real personal data
  • Urgency to move funds to a 'safe' account
  • Caller ID matches the real institution
Crypto

Investment Platform Fraud

Fake forex, binary options, and crypto trading platforms show fabricated gains until victims try to withdraw — at which point taxes, verification, or KYC fees appear.

Warning signs
  • Unusually high, consistent returns
  • Withdrawals require extra deposits
  • Platform not registered with any regulator
